Diencephalic amnesia: a reappraisal.

The anatomical basis of memory disorder related to lesions of the diencephalon is a controversial matter. A study of a patient who developed severe amnesia in association with bilateral metastatic tumour invasion of the medial and posterior thalamus is reported. The findings in this case have led to further discussion of this unsettled issue.

Hippocampal and diencephalic pathology in developmental amnesia

Developmental amnesia (DA) is a selective episodic memory disorder associated with hypoxia-induced bilateral hippocampal atrophy of early onset. Despite the systemic impact of hypoxia-ischaemia, the resulting brain damage was previously reported to be largely limited to the hippocampus. However, the thalamus and the mammillary bodies are parts of the hippocampal-diencephalic network and are the...

Functional MRI study of diencephalic amnesia in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Anterograde amnesia in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is associated with diencephalic lesions, mainly in the anterior thalamic nuclei. Whether diencephalic and temporal lobe amnesias are distinct entities is still not clear. We investigated episodic memory for faces using functional MRI (fMRI) in eight controls and in a 34-year-old man with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and diencephalic lesions but ...

Retrograde amnesia in patients with diencephalic, temporal lobe or frontal lesions.

Patients with focal diencephalic, temporal lobe, or frontal lobe lesions were examined on various measures of remote memory. Korsakoff patients showed a severe impairment with a characteristic 'temporal gradient', whereas two patients with focal diencephalic damage (and anterograde amnesia) were virtually unimpaired on remote memory measures. Patients with frontal lobe pathology were severely i...

Equivalent forgetting rates in long-term memory for diencephalic and medial temporal lobe amnesia.

Amnesia can result from damage to either the midline diencephalon or the medial temporal lobe. An important related question has been whether these two forms of amnesia result in similar or different kinds of memory impairment. Earlier studies raised the possibility that differences might exist in the rate of forgetting within long-term memory, specifically, that the forgetting rate is normal i...
